Niugundang Fm
Type Locality and Naming
It was named by No. 1 Regional Survey Party under the Geological Bureau of Sichuan Province in 1966, and was first cited publicly by the Compiling Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of Sichuan Province. The naming section is located in the area of Xincun Village of Changxin Township till Guangou Gully, Huidong County, Sichuan Province.
Synonym: (牛滚凼组)
Lithology and Thickness
Composed largely of bright-red and brown-red mudstones and calcareous mudstones, with its top part being intercalated with grey and purple thin-bedded-thick-bedded marls, with the mudstones often containing scolites, and with a thickness commonly of 300-500 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Xincun Fm
Upper contact
It is in a conformable contact with the overlying Guangou Fm
Regional extent
The formation is distributed in the areas of Huidong, Huili and Xichang of southwestern Sichuan. Its lithology in various regions is comparatively stable, being represented entirely by bright-red mudstone, and thus being known as the “Wine-Red Strata”.

Fossils
It yields Ostracoda fossils as represented by Darwinula sarytirmenensis and D. impudica, as well as bivalve and Gastropoda fossils.
